Lemon Gameboy Music Tracker
October 31st, 2007As you may or may not now, I actively check my referrers to see where people come from, and what they searched for when they ended up at my blog. Sometimes I find really interesting things, and this is one of them.
Someone from Czech (Hello 
) searched for lemon tracker gameboy. This tool has totally passed me by. It is appearantly a tracker without its own sequencer. Instead, it converts modules made with FT2 to its own format. I have still to check it out, but it seems to be a decent player that was abandoned before it was done, and no sources exist for LMP 2, as far as I can find. And no good contact info either. (Edit: I found a way now)

I’m actually considering disassembling the LMP2 demo and extract and maybe improve the player engine, if I get the time to it. I’m convinced I can do it with some time and effort, but if I’m going to give it a try, I want at least one person to say they want me to do it. I’m also contacting Gilles (Lemon) about this, and I’ll see if he’ll answer.
Should I start a BT tracker?
October 25th, 2007This is one of those ideas I get sometimes. The kind that are big-headed, foolish and bound to fail miserably.
But, to fill the void after OiNK, I’m considering starting my own BitTorrent tracker. I will never be able to make it though. I don’t have anywhere decent to host it. I could host on my 8/1 ADSL line, but that’s no good… I don’t have any BT tracker software ready to run. My software of choice will probably be TBSource. However, it’s said to be filled with bugs, and I’d force myself to go through the whole source code to kill bugs and customize it, using time I don’t have.
In short it’s bound to fail, and even if I try my hardest it probably will. But I still think it’s a good idea. Sorry for wasting my time on a useless post, but I just needed to get this idea out of my head.
Blippblopp-festival på Lava, Stockholm, 27-28 oktober
October 24th, 2007Den här helgen så anordnar Kulturhuset/Lava i samarbete med microdisko och OXO Unlimited en tvådagarsfestival i DIY-kulturens tecken. Det kommer att bli live-framträdanden av några av Sveriges bästa artister och workshops där du kan prova på chipmusik, breakcore och circuitbending.
Själv kommer jag hålla i en workshop i LSDj och spela även spela live.

October 24th, 2007Here’s a video of my 512b javascript demo, Colorful Tentacle. It’s a web browser demo that I wrote in 512 bytes. It’s coded in Javascript, not Java. Here’s a video of it. To add to the mix, it’s not shown on a desktop browser, but on the Nintendo DS version of Opera.

R.I.P. OiNK.cd
October 23rd, 2007Update! I’ve noticed that during the last 24 hours, I have gotten 600 new visitors (And counting) to my blog through search engines queries about OiNK. There are to things that I’d like you people to do.
One thing is more altruistic. FOR-OiNK is an idea of a way to help share the immense music library of OiNK with the world. If you were an OiNKer check it out!
The other thing is more egoistic. I’d like you to click here to listen to my Gameboy music. It’s free, but thanks to the ads, I receive a tiny amount of money every time someone listens to one of my songs. In that way you can support me and my blog. Thank you in advance.
It has come to my unfortunate attention that OiNK.cd (Previously OiNK.me.uk) has been shut down. Just a few hours ago the server room in Netherlands was raided, and at the same time the OiNK*, the administrator was arrested in the UK.
First there was a message telling people to refer to media for information but the incident. Not soon after, the message was replaced by a notice saying the following in a monotype font:
This site has been closed as a result of a criminal investigation by IFPI, BPI, Cleveland Police and the Fiscal Investigation Unit of the Dutch Police (FIOD ECD) into suspected illegal music distribution.
A criminal investigation continues into the identities and activities of the site’s users
The message confirmed my initial suspicion - they’re not going mainly after OiNK, but they’re planning to file lawsuit’s against individual people. It is yet so far unknown whether they’ll go after all users, top seeders or a selected few sceners who spread pre-release music. The organizations behind the raid are IFPI’s evil twin, their British equivalent BFI, as well as British and Dutch police.
I’m pleased to see that this also made it into the mainstream news, at least here in Sweden, where Dagens Nyheter, Sweden’s biggest daily wrote about it in their net edition. Maybe we’ll see it in the printed edition tomorrow as well.
The last few days before the attack, there was a discussion on the site about a new feature that would allow users to hide their uploads and seeds from their public profile, to help protect their security. Maybe this was the move that made IFPI and fellow predators to attack. We might never get to know.
OiNK’s Pink Palace will always be in my heart for being a great source for high quality music, thanks to a dedicated staff, and for having a loving (Although as it seemed drug using) community.
Rest in peace, OiNK.cd, or better, fight back and resurrect.
* Footnote: A little clarification of something that most people might not know. OiNK was not actually the name of the site, it is the nickname of the site’s founder and main administrator. The formal name of the site was “OiNK’s (not so) pink palace”.

Akiba-kei (Song preview)
September 21st, 2007Please excuse the background noise. Something went havoc with my sound card, and the noise was all over. I’ll re-record once I get it sorted out.
Other than that, this is a tune produced in less than 24 hours, which is uncommon for me. (Usually takes months from start to finish, if I ever finish it)
I’ll probably release the sav for this one, once I’ve ploished it a bit.
The Moxibustor - A glitchy oscillator

Here we have the second prototype of the Moxibustor glitch oscillator synth. The first prototype had slightly different components, and reminded me of a dub siren in some modes. The second prototype has slightly different components and also a second IC.
What does the Moxibustor do really? It has three knobs and a buttons. Each knob controls the frequency of an astable Schmitt trigger oscillator. The frequency ranges have are different on purpose, so one of the oscillators can go down to down to sub-bass frequencies, and work as an LFO, and one can go up to 1 kHz or so.
The three signals are mixed digitally at the resolution of 1 bit. This clips the three square waves even more, which gives an effect called intermodulation distorsion, which slightly, but not completely, resembles ring modulation. Then there’s also a secondary chip, a decade counter (Just happened to have it lying around :p )
The result is a glitchy thing that offers a variety of glitchy square wave-ish sounds.
But don’t take my word for it, listen for yourself. (Caution: loud)

Ureshii needs your help! (QC and editors)
September 4th, 2007I’m following Dennou Coil (Subbed by Ureshii) but lately they’ve been suffering from some delays due to lack of personnel. (Which is almost worse than C&D’s… :/ ) Dennou Coil is a children’s animé which has been described as “Cyberpunk for kids” and “Not cyberpunk, but not not cyberpunk” by different people. It’s not everybody’s cup of tea, (Naruto, Bleach, blergh :p ) but I really like it.
I doubt people who read my blog are more likely than Ureshii’s readers to be what they’re looking for, but it’s worth a try. So if you think you can do animé quality check or editing, please contact Ureshii!
